Laying the Foundation - Identifying Potential Leaders for Church Planting
In the early stages of a church plant, identifying potential leaders is a foundational task that will shape the future trajectory of the church. Much like when Jesus intentionally chose His twelve disciples, this process is critical for church planting success. As He said in Luke 6:13, "When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles."
Here are some critical steps in identifying potential leaders:
1. Pray for Guidance: Prayer is the first step in identifying potential leaders. Ask God to provide discernment and highlight individuals who have the potential to grow into leadership roles.
2. Look for Spiritual Maturity: While potential leaders may not be perfect, they should display signs of spiritual maturity. Look for traits like faithfulness, humility, a heart for service, personal devotion to Christ, and a desire to grow in godliness.
3. Assess Skills and Gifts: Identifying leaders also involves assessing skills and spiritual gifts. Look for those who can lead others, communicate effectively, solve problems, and collaborate well. Additionally, take note of the spiritual gifts that individuals may bring to leadership roles.
4. Observe Consistency and Commitment: Consistency and commitment over time are strong indicators of leadership potential. Those who consistently serve, participate, and demonstrate commitment to the church community often make excellent leaders.
5. Provide Opportunities for Growth: Once potential leaders are identified, provide them with opportunities to serve, lead, and grow. These opportunities can reveal their strengths, expose areas for growth, and help them develop confidence in their leadership abilities.
6. Develop a Relationship: Identifying potential leaders isn't just about assessing abilities; it's also about building relationships. Spend time with potential leaders, get to know their hearts, and invest in their spiritual growth.
Remember, leadership identification isn't about finding the 'finished product.' Instead, it's about identifying those with potential who, with investment and mentoring, can grow into the leaders your church plant needs.
As we seek God's guidance in identifying leaders, let's take encouragement from Paul's words to Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:12, "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and purity." With these words in mind, let's have the courage to identify, nurture, and empower the leaders that will help our church plant grow and thrive.
